Most of these festivals, which are mostly religious in nature, have several unique myths and legends that lend a mystic aura. Onam by far is the biggest event in the Malayali calendar. In fact, it almost qualifies as the national festival of the State. Because of its popularity, it almost ceases to be a religious festival and forms an occasion of general celebration and get together.

Onam is held during the Malayali month of Chingam (Aug-Sep). It coincides with the tourist week celebration of the State. The image of Thrikkakara Appan (Vishnu in the form of Vamana) is installed in every Hindu household during the Onam season.

Other important festivals in the Malayali calendar include Hindu festivals like the Vishu, Mahasivarathi, Navarathri, Asthami Rohini, Thrikarthiaka, Christian festivals like the Christmas and Easter and Muslim festivals like the Bakrid, Idul Fitr, Muharram etc.
